espressoMaths: a drop-by station

The aim of this short report is to discuss some issues associated with the establishment of, the running of, and the development of a Mathematics and Statistics support drop-by station in a large, distributed campus university environment. The discussion is rooted in our experiences of setting up and of developing espressoMaths at the University of the West of England, Bristol. The main thrust ...

Finger drop following a potassium drop.

H ypokalemic paralysis can occur primarily as a result of an enhanced shift of potassium ions into cells or secondarily from excessive potassium loss. It typically involves proximal muscles in a symmetric fashion. We describe a patient with asymmetric distal weakness that turned out to be due to hypokalemia and responded to potassium replacement. A 65 year old gentleman woke up one morning to f...

Fast and reliable protein microarray production by a new drop-in-drop technique.

In contrast to DNA microarrays, production of protein microarrays is an immense technological challenge due to high complexity and diversity of proteins. In this paper we investigate three essential aspects of protein microarray fabrication based on the highly parallel and non-contact TopSpot technology: evaporation of probes during long lasting production times, optimization of protein immobil...

Foot drop caused by a brain tumor: a case report.

Foot drop is commonly caused by lumbar radiculopathy, peroneal nerve injury, spinal stenosis and other systemic diseases. It is usually thought as peripheral etiology, but it could be attributed to a central lesion, too. However, central lesions are rarely reported. We report a case diagnosed as a left parasagittal parietal tumor, in which drop foot was the only abnormal neurologic finding.

Four different types of a single drop dripping down a hole under gravity by lattice Boltzmann method

In this paper the dynamic of a droplet on a surface with a hole is investigated under gravitational effect by using lattice Boltzmann method. Incompressible two-phase flow with high density ratio proposed by Lee is considered. Cahn’s theory is used to observe the wettability of the surface in contact with liquid and gas phases. Several parameters such as contact angle, surface tension and gravi...
